What is included in a Proposal

1.  Include a cover letter containing your name, return address, and daytime phone number with your proposal.  It should also include a tentative descriptive title. Do your homework and see how cover letters are formatted. The cover letter is for our records and will not be returned to you.

2.  A description of the subject matter, scope, and intended audience.  Supply detailed information   on the marketability of your book, including:
  • book summary (and purpose, if non-fiction)
  • book's unique content and characteristic
  • proposed book length, measured in words
  • state how many, and what sort of, photographs and/or illustrations will be used
  • list any special considerations for book size, format, design or layout
  • estimate how much time you will need to deliver the completed manuscript if non-fiction. If fiction, your book should be completed and ready for viewing.
  • Target audience - Who is the audience for your book, and why do they need to buy your book?
  • How do you intend to promote your book?
3.  Whether any part of the book has been published previously and, if so, where.

4. Whether you have written permission to use material that may be copyrighted (illustrations, lengthy quotations from scholarly works, or quotations from fiction or poetry).

7. A full synopsis. If you are unsure about this, Ask.

8.  Include the Preface and two sample chapters or, the first three chapters to give the publisher an idea of your writing style and the actual content of the book.
